Can I restore the old Photo app in iOS17?

Does anyone know how to restore the old Photo app of iOS17 or maybe the whole iOS17?

The new iOS18 is headache. It’s taking extra space. It’s a bit slower and draining battery faster. However, those are all manageable. The worst is the new Photo app. It’s a nightmare. When a company can’t create a new good innovation, they start to kill their good ones.

Can you change the new update on photos back to the old system. The new one is hard to navigate, I cant find the categories used on the last version. It is not user friendly. Can you reverse this back to the orginal software on photos.

Except that it doesn't. It doesn't even come close. In fact, it's more likely to annoy people because they come here for help, see a post that looks like it might help them only to be sent to a page that is as far away from helpful for their particular situation as it could be.

Most people who don't like the new photos app don't like it because of specific things it does, not general useability. The ability to separate photos taken with the phone from those synched with Mac folders has gone, and this has upset a lot of users because they can no longer use the app like they used to. It's impacted or destroyed their previous workflows - for no good reason that anyone who uses their phone like that can understand or has had explained to them. The fact that you and others who post here don't find the change awful probably means you don't use Photos like the people who are complaining about it but that doesn't mean they're using it wrong.

No you can not. While the change to the photo app was a bit jarring from what we were used to it isn’t something most can’t eventually get used to. You can also try going through the options to make it a little less annoying visually. Otherwise as of right now you can submit feedback and hope that Apple decides to change some things in future updates. I say all of this as a user that doesn’t really love the change but I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a nightmare. It’s not unusable or crashing. It’s just a big difference from what we have been accustomed to.

This might help you play around with options to make it a little more bearable for now.

Customize the Photos app on iPhone - Apple Support

I'm a pretty heavy user of the photo app. And I'm not saying anyone is using it wrong. Nor am I suggesting everyone has to like it. But live with it, they must. This is a user to user only forum. Coming here to complain about the new Photo app is not going to get any attention from Apple. People who don't like it may get pleasure from seeing others share their view on the new app, but that won't get it changed back.

The best you can do is either learn to adjust to it. Or use the suggestions in the link Lawrence Finch provided to customize it to more resemble it before the change. Or provide feedback to Apple here, where it will actually be read by Apple --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

I know your frustration. The new layout of Photo app is a terrible UI/UX design.

First, they assume we would love this new layout with a lot of useless grouping, when the old one is clean, simple and intuitive. They divert from the Apple’s unique design style.

Second, they give a new option to let us rearrange the layout, but that new feature is hard to see. It’s at the bottom of the app, displayed as a sample line. You have to scroll down to the bottom, all the way through their long list of useless grouping as mentioned in #1.

Third, their default layout is totally away from their old system. The frequently used Album and Deleted are put at the bottom by default, instead of being right after the gallery as in the old system. So there is no transitioning for us to know this new App at all. They just dump whatever to the table and demand us to accept it.

I don’t understand who would love it, perhaps only the persons working for this new Photo app.

How can I uninstall the 18.1.1 update? Can’t do it in Storage. If I can’t, hello Samsung!!!

I’m certain that a Samsung will be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT, and everything on it will work exactly the way you expect it to forever. But you might want to read the Samsung support forums.

Keep in mind that no one here cares how you throw away your money.

So, you just came to say you hate Apple and you didn't read past the first post, right? Read the thread which is ONLY two pages and see a post from Lawrence Finch, which contains a link you can use to customize your Photo app to make it much more like it was before the update.

Personally, I really like the changes Apple made. It's NOT the worst update at all. It's simply a change, which if you actually took the time to learn, you might find it's not so awful. Again, you can make changes to it as detailed in the link.

Or simply hate Apple, which is honestly an irrational response to change, which is inevitable.

My comment was deleted, because I’m saying the original multi-layer navigation was a better UX/UI than this current single page.

It's unlikely that is the reason your post was removed. It's perfectly acceptable to say you like or dislike something Apple has done or designed. As long as you're polite about how you express yourself, there are actually very few things you can't say here, e.g. discussions of beta software, speculation about unreleased products, personally identifying information. Oh, and complaining about moderation. Surefire way to get your post yanked.

We will see if this one will stay. I’m not going to write any feedback to them. Why do I bother to help them improve, if they don’t respect me.

Cutting off your nose to spite your face, as the saying goes. The only person who stands to lose with that view is you.

I’m going to buy a Google phone next time.

You should always buy the tool that best meets your needs.

I sent feedback, complimenting Apple on the greatly improved Photos app.

It's curious that the people who like the new Photos app are all high-level members of these boards. Assuming you're not trolling, do you have to agree to write posts like this in order to get to the higher levels? It's a serious question.

We're not trolls and it's actually disingenuous of you to think we have to agree on anything to become senior members. We become senior members because we have taken our PERSONAL time over many years helping users solve technical issues, which CAN be solved and in doing so, users upvote our answers, which gives us points. Coming here to complain about the change in the Photos app is not a technical issue at all. The new Photos app has been greatly enhanced over previous generations. And the enhancements are more than welcome to me. But then, I've taken the time to learn the changes and embrace them.
