Auto-Correction is changing my words incorrectly after iOS 18 update on iPhone

I've been an iPhone user for 15 years and I've never had issues with the autocorrect like I've had since upgrading to iOS 18. I'm not exaggerating when I say it's been completely debilitating. I've literally had to resort to dictation because typing a simple message can take me 10 minutes.

Every word I type ending with 's' gets autocorrected wrong. For instance, "jobs" gets changed to "job a." Literally EVERY SINGLE word ending with 's' gets appended with an 'a' for no reason.

I used to type contractions without the apostrophe because I could always count on iOS to add it for me. Now it just changes "whats" to "what a", "wheres" to "where a", "whens" to "when a", etc. And sometimes it's even worse where things like "didnt" somehow become "did my."

Words that aren't incorrect are changed to ones that are:

"our" to "out"

"come" to "coke"

"some" to "dime"

"guy" to "but"

"wise" to "word"

"quicker" to "quick we"

"stronger" to "step get"

And other total chaos:

"ask" to "as k"

"about" to "a out"

"these" to "the we"

"into" to "i to"

"hello" to "**** i"

"today" to "to day"

"maybe" to "may be"

"anyway" to "any way"

"called" to "call ed"

And these are only a handful of examples I've noticed in the last half hour or so.

PLEASE APPLE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD FIX THIS!!!

This is broken to the point where it should be a matter of profound shame to Apple. Alongside Siri's utter inability to understand even basic verbal commands on homepods. The ability to interact with your device is the ground floor, most basic need for any technology and Apple are utterly failing on this.

There are a number of fixes mentioned below that might help (a bit) but the best solution is to simply use a different keyboard on your phone. Specifically Gboard. The interface isn't quite as clean and stickers aren't the same but you can switch between keyboards easily enough where necessary.

And so far Gboard hasn't tried to change 'thanks' to 'Thaki's' or tomorrow to 'Romeo's' or 'and' to 'ANDY'

Blood boilingly awful issue and in an era of AI one which shouldn't even be on the radar.

AutoCorrect is not just unusable, is mostly inaccurate especially when using speech to text. It creates words that are not even in the dictionary. At least not common language words. This has been happening over the last 2 to 3 years. I used to rely 100% on speech to text for iMessage, especially or other chat apps. No longer.

I tried to replace the keyboard with Google’s, which would include Google speech to text, however, Apple doesn’t really allow you to replace that function cleanly. When using Google it has to go to another screen to capture it and then bringing it back as a pain in the butt.

if Apple is not going to fix it, then at least allow us to replace it with a third-party seamlessly.

it is truly amazing that with the increased accuracy of machine, learning and AI chat, bots, the Apple and Siri are decreasing exponentially in accuracy and usability.

apple. Please help!!!

BTW. Excuse some of my typos above and misplacement of commas, after all, I was using Apple‘s speech to text. I caught most of the problems, including sentence structure, however, not easy. 😕

It astonishing how bad it is. Consider ChatGPT’s autocorrect and voice recognition which is almost spooky in how accurate it is. Amazing how far Apple has fallen behind the pack here, and even more astonishing is how, not only do they seem unable to catch up, they’re going backwards

hmmm that explains a lot. my phone has been set to spanish for years as i slowly learn it but english is certainly my first and only fluent language. i’ve had trouble in the past with spanish keyboard not recognizing english words, however previously i’ve just switched back to the english keyboard with no problem.

In a Reddit post, I read that turning off the APPLE DICTIONARY will eliminate the maddening autocorrect behaviors. Apparently, it’s some kind of AI-related “glitch” that they stupidly & inconsiderately unleashed upon the public.

I’ve done this, and it worked—today was Day 1 with it turned off, and I feel normal again—

To turn it off, go to Settings > General > Dictionary > Uncheck “Apple Dictionary” (go down the list, and you’ll see it checked)

Yeap, worse. It used to be that if a word in a text messaging thread had been used recently, Apple wouldn't try to correct it. Afaict, that's no longer the case. I had typed in 'blacktip reef shark' in a previous text, but when I tried to type 'reef' a few minutes later, it kept correcting it to 'reed' or 'red' or anything but what I had typed. And it keeps putting a red line under the name of my cat 'Lunk'--admittedly an odd name, but so is the cat. Lunk is now 22 years old, so Apple should have had time to learn his name.

most auto .orrect (autocorrect) text comes out with some other different combination of words and letters!

i (i.e., capitalization of the first letter in a sentence doesn’t always work—and yes, it is still enabled in settings.

also (see there is another in capitalized letter) the letter i in the middle of a sentence no longer works! i (see again) can no longer use the text properly.

finally, (again) many words and phrases i use when dictating are not cor .etc either!

driving me crazy!

It RUINED MY PHONE because of this text message issue after IOS 18! I’ve had iPhone for 20 years and have never been so stressed out & angry over a phone because after this update you’re constantly having to correct autocorrect and it’s nothing but a stressful, time consuming, chore to text people now. I’ve never been so livid with a phone & Apple. Why TF did they do that to us & NOT FIX IT?! APPLE FIX THIS ASAP!!
