ICLOUD "syncing has been disabled due to an error" message

I get the message (ICLOUD) "syncing has been disabled due to an error" when trying to open a file. Trying to open certain files I get the message "The operation couldn’t be completed. No space left on device". In terms of storage I have 48Gb out of 494Gb on HD. Any ideas?

Apple expects your Mac to have at least 10% of the hard drive free. You're at 9.7%, which just doesn't leave the Mac enough room to turn around in. I have found 20% free seems to be better.

You're going to have to clear out some room so you can get things done. I keep important but less used files on a small (1 ounce) SSD that I carry around with my MacBook so that I can have enough free space. I learned in childhood that cleaning my room was painful. It hasn't changed…
