Pages consumed over 400GB of RAM!

Short version: I was busy typing up a proposal in Pages, which had embedded sheets from Numbers, nothing too fancy.

When I suddenly got the out of memory error:

Notice how Pages consumed 435GB of RAM!

Long story: I bought this iMac in Feb 2022. I've had continuous crashes on it. I have updated the OS everytime an update goes out, however I still experienced crashes. I thought it was the dreaded GPU problem with the video card and I do have multiple monitors.

Finally, after much suffering and pain, I finally figured out trying to reset the NVRAM, and booting up into safe mode.

Happy to say, so far, my system hadn't crashed in 9 days.

So... maybe it wasn't any of this hardware.. maybe it was Pages all along? Because I always have it open, and I've just never gotten this out of memory error before.

In any event, there shouldn't be any reason that Pages uses half a terrabyte!

I ended up killing off Pages, getting my RAM back, all without a crash.

So, hopefully, somebody at Apple Apps/OS engineering sees this post. I'm happy to provide any logs or data to help diagnose this run way memory leak in Pages.

PS: I can send the offending document to a verified Apple employee... I won't post it here.

Not enough information to know why Pages used that excessive RAM. Reboot your Mac, and run fewer applications.

There is a Provide Pages Feedback menu item on the Pages application menu. That goes directly to the Pages product team. It is strictly limited to text and a small amount of content, so be factual and succinct. If they want to know more, they will send an email to the address associated with your Apple ID requesting further information.

Don't get your hopes up about any response. The volume of feedback they receive is overwhelming, and in my own experience, if they do respond, it may be a month from now or some other protracted timeframe.

I believe in 12 years, and an unremembered number of feedback posts to them, they may have reached out to me twice. In one case, they simply never followed through and left me hanging…

Rhetorically, how many feature feedback requests do you think they received about re-enabling non-contiguous text selection since Oct 2013? It took them 8 years to fix that glaring void.
