How do I remove my desktop and documents from iCloud?

I have gone onto iCloud and turned off desktop and documents and all it does is cause the desktop and documents to disappear completely off of my computer because for some reason they are now solely stored on iCloud instead of locally on my computer. I can't find a way to move them off of the drive and onto my computer before unlinking iCloud.
