Search in mail not working after upgrade to Sequoia

After upgrading neither the search bar in the Apple Mail app nor the VIP mailboxes work anymore. I tried to rebuild already twice but no change. What can I do?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 15.0

I had the same issue, and found this solution from a previous OS, but it worked for me:

I am not sure why this worked, but it did. A few short steps (reiterated here) that took less than a minute to complete.

System Settings >> Spotlight >> deselect Mail & Messages

Restart computer

System Settings >> Spotlight >> select Mail & Messages
