iPod nano 5th gen white screen when charging

I just inherited an old iPod nano 5th gen and there is something wrong with it. When you press a button nothing happens, and when you charge it nothing happens for a minute, and then it gives you a white screen and the buttons work (I tested this by spamming the center button, and when music played, I hit [menu] and scrolled with the click wheel both ways and hitting the center button again to play a different song). I am almost certain it is a hardware problem, but I’m not sure. Does anyone know what is happening?
