I am not that advanced in Logic 11, but I know a little. I have used Logic Drummer and the different session players. I want to trigger a timpani hit, and copy it to different sections in the song. Is there a timpani I can pull up in logic and record it using my mouse or a keyboard shortcut to trigger it so I can add it to a track? Or using a midi controller?

For typing with the mouse go to Window > Show Keyboard.
For using your computer keyboard go to Window > Musical Typing.
However, the most convenient way is to use a musical midi/usb keyboard.
