Mail loses track of read/unread status

Mail 16.0 (3696.120.41.1.10), on my 2016 MacBook Pro under Monterey 12.7.6, frequently loses track of the read/unread status of received emails. My wife and I have separate email accounts, that are both handled on both of our MacBooks. Often, all emails on my MacBook Pro are shown as Unread in "All Inboxes" or when both of our Inboxes are selected. This can be corrected by 1) selecting any other mailbox, 2) selecting one of our Inboxes, and 3) command-clicking on the other of our Inboxes, so that both are selected. I have not seen this happen on my wife's MacBook Air M2 under Sequoia 15.0.1 with Mail 16.0 (3816.100.11.1.3). Suggestions on how to avoid this problem, for longer stretches of time, will be greatly appreciated.
