problems setting up custom email domain with icloud+

I have a dot-com website that once-upon-a-time had a Google email, long unused. I'm now trying to set the domain / 2 existing email addresses up as a personalized email with icloud, but cannot get one of the emails to "verify" -- it just shows as "pending."

Do I need to delete the existing Google account? There's exactly zero data or history there.
