New or reply emails almost fill the screen - new

Sonoma 14.6.1: recently when I start a new email or reply to an email, the message zooms out to become almost full screen. (Not an escape key situation) I can choose zoom menu bar to reduce to normal size, but would like this to change back and reflect the size window I see when reading an email. Thank you.
