icloud photos can't find menus stuck inside album view

I opened a shareable album, now I can't get out of it. I see only the photos. Album path backwards link on top left doesn't work.

Generally iCloud Photos seems to stink. I can't tell how many photos are uploading, or where they are in that process. Or any sort of status or error messages other than the occasional 'failed' message.

If I reopen iCloud Photos from main web page, my shareable album doesn't show up in the list of shareable albums. Something obscure is happening in the background, but it's painful trying to guess what it is.
