apple music on mac won't play library

I have a 12 month old imac. My library is physically in the right place, streaming via iphone works ok.

On the mac all of a sudden if i click into say Artists, then pick an album it just flicks through all the song titles but won't play. Very bizarre.

It will play stuff in the recently added tab.

Any ideas?!

software on the mac is uptodate

thanks!

Wondering if browsing through the Apple Music User Guide may prove helpful:

ie: for MacOS Sequoia: See: Apple Music User Guide for Mac - Apple Support

Eg: one article: Play songs from your library in Music on Mac - Apple Support

says you can use Siri:

or

  1. Go to the Music app on your Mac.
  2. Do any of the following to find music in your music library:
  • Find a specific song or album: Click any item below Library in the sidebar.

For example, click Albums to display all the albums in your library.

    • Choose View > Only Downloaded Music to see only music stored on your Mac.
    • Choose a playlist: Select a playlist below Playlists in the sidebar.
    • Search your music library: See Search for music.
  1. Move the pointer over any song or album, then click .
