How can I switch iCloud email address from Gmail to iCloud

Hi, I’m hoping for some advice please.

my current iCloud setup is with a gmail account email address which I am wanting to remove in exchange for a iCloud email address.

I have tried every way that on line is telling but nothing.

I have set up a completely new iCloud email address.

is their a simple way of adding my new address and removing the gmail address ?

or do I cancel/close down my gmail linked account and start a fresh with iCloud.

I feel my request is simple but I’m going around in circles and get known where fast.
