Mail on iOS18 'Invalid email address' error.

I recently replaced my smashed iPhone with an XR. Setting up Mail (which had been working fine on the previous iPhone 7) proved to be very tricky. I can now receive emails ok but whenever I try to send one to whatever email address I get 'Invalid email address'. The addresses are definitely correct.

What can I do?
