How can I add a timer or stopwatch to the menu bar on MacBook Air ? (Sonoma at the moment). The clock widget doesn't have any thing like this as far as I can see.

FWIW, the Clock app displays the timer/stopwatch in the menu bar, even when you hide the app. There is also Horo in the App Store.
