iPhone Email alerts silenced in iOS 18

After installing iOS 18, I noticed that sounds/haptics associated with receiving new emails have been silenced altogether. All that happens is that the email silently shows up on the Lock Screen. (At least that works.)

In the past, I would try to kick-start the phone by changing the 'ding' for new emails, and for that matter going through the bother of switching each of the sounds back and forth. The result was for a while sounds and haptics worked again. But that approach no longer works in iOS 18.

Any ideas? Is this a known bug; or perhaps Apple has meant to exclude sounds/haptics when you receive a new email?
