IOS18.0.1 Recently Deleted Photos Album

Just accidentally deleted a photo. Prior to updating to the above the recently deleted folder was visible to me. Cannot find it, google search advises the folder is now hidden but I have the setting for hidden folders to show (and have no other hidden folders anyway as I don't use that function). Then advised I have to find it via a Utilities menu which should appear when I have the photos app open and swipe up. No, no sign of a utilities menu.

I have masses of photos now showing on the home screen where before all I had were the photos I had taken (I don't want all my album photos on show), I have 'From My Mac' with my synched folders, 'Albums' which seems to be my Twitter photos, and then Customise & 'Reorder'

If I go to the very bottom of the actual photos and gently pull down I get Years Months All and an icon with two arrows which give me sort by recently added/date captured and the filter and view options.

This is on an iphone 14 Pro Max. The photos app used to be really easy to use, since the update to ios 18 I have spent so much time researching how to use it for functions which previously were self-evident.

Grateful for any assistance, thanks.

You may want to have a look at this page in the user guide: Customize the Photos app on iPhone - Apple Support

Photos on iOS 18 does not have a fixed layout of the albums and collection. You can freely configure, which collections will be shown or hidden. The Recently Deleted album is a part of the "Others" collection.

  1. Go to the Photos app  on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the app, then tap Customize & Reorder.

Make sure, that "Others" is not hidden.

Thank you - when I wrote my initial problem I did not have 'utilities' available which was why I could not proceed. I eventually stopped trying, re-booted my phone and looked again when Leonie first replied to me and I did then have the menu list with utilities. I'd just moved from an iphone 14 Pro Max to the 16 Pro Max so not sure if some of my settings did not transfer correctly (and I hadn't looked at the photos app on my 14 since updating to ios18). I was unexpectedly away from home (bereavement to deal with) so turned to this forum for assistance and am, as always, eternally grateful for those who do assist.

Favorites is a view in Pinned Collections. Here's the default order for the "Collections" sections that are after the Library:

This list is from the Customize & Reorder menu available at the very bottom of the Main Window. If you like, you can move Pinned Collections to the very top so it's easier to get to. Pinned Collections also has a "Modify" menu to allow you to add other things to it.

All your pictures are shown in Library. Everything else is just a list of pictures from the Library that you can see together. That's why you can put a picture into multiple albums without using more space. The picture of "Aunt Ethel at the Grand Canyon" can be in the "Aunt Ethel" album with other pictures of Aunt Ethel, and it can also be in the "Grand Canyon"  album with pictures of other people at the Grand Canyon. And it can also be in a the "September 2015" album with other things that happened then. And when you remove a picture from an album, its name remains in the lists of other albums, and the file still remains in your Library. Each album view is pointing to a single file stored in the Photos Library, so having pictures in multiple albums takes up no more storage space. As you can imagine, this is very powerful in organizing pictures.

Apple really screwed the pooch with this update!

I don't agree-- this version adds a great deal of versatility. You could never before remove certain views to customize the system for your own needs. Of course, if you don't take advantage of that, and you just throw absolutely everything on the screen, then it looks more confusing. And who's screwing the pooch then?
