TurboTax 2024 and Monterey 12.7.6 OS

I have a MacPro early 2015 and it will only update to Monterey 12.7.6.

TurboTax wrote me: "We’ll be updating our macOS system requirements for TurboTax Desktop products

for tax year 2024. For 2024 tax returns prepared with TurboTax Desktop

for Mac, macOS Ventura 13 or later will be required. At TurboTax, the security of our customers’ data is a top priority. Apple has announced they will no longer provide security updates or support for macOS Monterey 12 as of November 2024. As a result, our latest TurboTax Desktop products for Mac won't support macOS Monterey 12."

Is there anything that can be done or do I need to buy a new laptop to get Ventura 13 or later OS?

Thank you in advance for your time and attention to my inquiry.

I just made this same mistake. I downloaded the turbotax software to my MacBook air w/ monterey then the software wouldn't run. Now I have $70 software I can't use. What did you end up doing?

SMALL NUMBER OF OLDER MACS? Seriously ?

There are MILLIONS of older macs still being used. Quality lasts.

But we are not talking about "Older macs" we are talking about four or five your old macs or even newer. I had to upgrade the OS on my macBook pro, just bought it last year, to Sequoia to do my taxes because of this BS and I will have to 'discover' what other software gets messed up by this change.

Nothing to do with a conspiracy, it is a Fact that they take the easy path and just drop support for products YOU PAID GOOD MONEY FOR.

Then the BS that you cannot install the latest OS on an older mac, got around that before, I'll figure it out again.

upgrade your os and just see what other software no longer works. We are users in the community, not paid software developers, when I find that Citrix does not work after upgrading to Sequoia I am sure if I complain about it on the Apple Community I will be ostracized. Will Photoshop still work? um......

No one, including Apple, forced Intuit to make that call.

Intuit could just as well have continued to support TT on older versions of macOS. There are plenty of apps that are still supported & running securely on older versions of macOS. Intuit just made the choice to limit TT to the "current three" macOS releases I suspect mostly out of cost (support cost) considerations.

A 2020 iMac can run Sequoia. That's a 5-year old Mac. A 2015 iMac can run up through Monterey, too old for the latest TurboTax. That's a 10-year old Mac.

I think MartinR is correct, Intuit may have discontinued support for MacOS as old as Monterey and "made the choice to limit TT to the 'current three' macOS releases ... out of cost (support cost) considerations."

Intuit has the right to make decisions that favor its business, and users have the right to be annoyed and look for and use other software that runs on older computers under old systems.

Also, you don't need to upgrade to Sequoia to run the latest TurboTax. You can run one of the most recent THREE MacOS, it does not have to be Sequoia. It can be MacOS Ventura 13, MacOS Sonoma 14, or MacOS Sequoia 15. And if your Mac can upgrade to MacOS 13, 14 or 15 but you don't want to because you want to keep running older software, you can easily create an external bootable drive with, say MacOS 13, 14 or 15 and use it just to do your taxes, and use your existing internal drive as is for everything else you do.

what ever happened to going to Intuit, buying the program, downloading it and just using it. What am I missing, I have spent an hour trying to figure this out. After upgrading my OS so I can 'use the program' I still can't get past the "Enter your License Code" but offers no way to buy a license code.

When I purchased TurboTax, I received an email that included the license code. It is also listed on your Intuit account info when you log in to your Intuit account.

Below is an excerpt from the email I received upon purchase:

Important information

Download

Your download is now available. Click the Sign in button to sign in to your Intuit Account. Your download will be listed in the “Downloads” tab. If you ordered a CD, your CD will be shipped in the next 10-14 business days.

License Code

Your license code is included in the Order information section below. Your license code is also included in the “Downloads” tab in your Intuit Account. It can be used to download your software now, or to install your CD later, if you ordered a CD.

If this does not work for you, I suggest you contact Intuit for that, it's not a MacOS issue.

If you log into your Intuit account and navigate to the TT page, it slots you into their online program, it usually takes some investigation to find the proper page to download it. And when you get there, they highlight the online program with the Yearly Subscription thing and the "Professional help" AI add-on, you have to choose the correct one, or it slots you into the Online version. The online version is "Free" but I suspect Intuit gets something from the IRS for their troubles. I'd rather have the software on my mac, MY OLDER MAC, and keep things in one place. Now 2024 is on my laptop. (Nice lap top, got the M1 Max, 27 minutes later the M2 was shipping LOL, and I got an M2 Ultra Studio in my office, been eyeing an M4 or M3 Ultra studio to replace my Still working Find 27 inch i7 mac that I have at home, but have to read up more on the M4 vs M3 business.)

I found the proper download, installed and did my taxes. It should not be that difficult to find the correct download site. That is the point I made.

It's aggravating and that should not be the case. We now have to use Electronic Filing and it should not be a chore to figure it out. "page one, Intuit, PURCHASE AND DOWNLOAD DESKTOP COPY here."

So I recreated my steps for others to follow since Intuits website STINKS.

Use www.Google.Com or DuckDuckGo or whatever search you like to search "buy turbo tax 2024"

you will possibly get a link to https://turbotax.intuit.com/lp/ppc/3761/?srqs=null&cid=ppc_gg_b_stan_all_na_Brand-BrandTT-BrandTTDownload-Phrase_ty24-bu2-sb7_723017294041_142950095679_kwd-321983944954&srid=Cj0KCQjw16O_BhDNARIsAC3i2GAVKycBGMWGQ50SADtbWGC_4Rh4zYEp63WrkNZ1VwHFz5QdUao-Zw0aAnpPEALw_wcB&targetid=kwd-321983944954&skw=turbotax%20download&adid=723017294041&ven=gg&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADkGAVlzF2iOj6AE-lzB5zWUALE99&gclid=Cj0KCQjw16O_BhDNARIsAC3i2GAVKycBGMWGQ50SADtbWGC_4Rh4zYEp63WrkNZ1VwHFz5QdUao-Zw0aAnpPEALw_wcB

Slide down to View Products, ignore the online stuff, vomit,

Click Shop Now (for say Deluxe edition)

next page CHOOSE WISELY, TurboTa Deluxe, Purchase.

Etc.

It should not require going to GOOGLE to find the proper page on Intuits Site.

got it??

Your post is misleading because you left out relevant information.

You left out the next part of the federal e-filing mandate:

"Under the new rules, filers of 10 or more returns of any type of for a calendar year generally will need to file electronically with the IRS. Previously, electronic filing was required if the filing was more than 250 returns of the same type for a calendar year."

So most filers do not need to file electronic federal returns.

As for New York, TurboTax did not make that New York e-file rule, New York did.

Also, New York State law prohibits a separate charge for e-filing the NY return:

https://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/efile/efile_mandate_for_individuals.htm

"The cost of tax preparation software always includes the e-filing service; New York State law prohibits additional charges."

in 25 states, you don't need TurboTax or ANY third-party software to file electronically with the IRS:

Direct File is now open and available in 25 participating states.

Prepare and file your federal taxes online directly with the IRS.

It’s always free, easy to use, accurate and secure.

Answer a few questions to find out if Direct File is the right option for your 2024 taxes.

Updated to use TT, and now My Lap top cannot print to my desk top WITH DIRECT WIRE USBC Connecting them, not network, "Hold for Authentication......." now I can spend the day figuring this out.

That is why I don't UPGRADE unless Absolutely necessary. Now I can try to up grade my desktop studio but on my work network that will take THREE Days to download the newest OS.

You guy who love to spend your day upgrading your systems can have fun with this. I don't appreciate it. I use my computers for WORK, not for messing around.

Addendum: I sent it to my "desktop" as PDF, shows up on "desktop" on my studio, print. At least that still works. I can write to my other computers desktop via Cloud Drive, but I cannot print to a printer with a HARD WIRE USB C cable connecting the two computers. My work around. great update.

USB-C cable is a really good peripheral interface cable. But the Mac does has never considered it a Network connection.

If you can get each of those computers on the internet at the same time without re-cabling, you already have a data highway you could use for Print Data. Just designate that Printer a "shared Printer", and macOS will print to it from any computer on your connected network.

you may have to be certain IPv6 is set to Link-local Only, NOT OFF, for Discovery to work.
