2 displays on Mac mini 2020

My Mac mini is not detecting my 2nd monitor, both monitors are VGA monitors connected with a thunderbolt vga to thunderbolt adapter. I can get each one to work when plugged in by itself, but when both are plugged in only one works. I have gone to Settings > displays and held the option key to get the detect displays key but nothing happens, it only shows one display.

Any suggestions?

The 2020 M1 Mac mini only supports one display from it's Thunderbolt/USB-C ports.

The second display will need to be connected to the 2020 Mac mini's HDMI port.

What monitors do you have...?

There are plenty of HDMI to VGA adapters on the market.

Problem is, that I have not personally tested any of those VGA adapters and can not recommend one.

Another option that I have used in the past with older VGA/DVI monitors, is an HDMI to DVI adapter.

VGA monitors through thunderbolt… hum. In the first place, you are certainly not aiming for an easy one, and if you eventually get image, it will likely occupy partial real estate of the monitors.

You may start by trying one monitor with a HDMI to VGA (through the HDMI port of the mini) and see what you get. Probably not impressive.

You would be able to get a much better result with low-end monitors equipped with HDMI (one in the HdMI port of the mini, the other one with an adapter to one of the TB/usb-c ports of the mini.

Hope this helps

Even though VGA is not used much by modern monitors, it's easy to find USB-C to VGA adapters. (I am guessing that there are still a lot of corporate meeting rooms that have projectors with VGA interfaces … enough so to keep the adapter market alive.)

They do not actually go from USB-C (Thunderbolt Alt Mode) to VGA … but from USB-C (DisplayPort Alt Mode) to VGA.

The issue with the M1 Mac mini is as den.thed describes. It can drive two monitors, but only if you connect one of them via USB-C or Thunderbolt, and the other via the built-in HDMI port.
