How can I access my macOS desktop remotely?

I have a MM (2010) model running Mac OS X server 5.2 and I have ARD enabled on it. I have a Synology router. When I connect to the Mac using VPN Plus, I am getting the macOS Server splash screen. I want to bypass this screen and see the desktop of this computer.

What am I missing?

I'm not sure what VPN Plus does or how it figures into this issue...?

Personally I use Screen Sharing to access and control the screen of my Mac mini media server.

If the connection is lost for whatever reason (shut down, sleep, a network issue) then the connection must be reestablished.
