How do you turn off "smart replies" for macOS/iOS Messages?

In the Apple Intelligence settings there is only on or off.

In Messages there is only a check box for "summarize messages."

Where is the setting to disable the AI "smart replies" in Messages?

It's awful and is driving me bonkers.

Thanks!

Try this. Under "Apple Intelligence"

Neither of the "solutions" posted here actually turn it off ("Show inline predictive text" or "Show Siri suggestions in application"). It does not appear there's any way to disable it without turning off Apple Intelligence altogether (and I'm not even sure _that_ works).

These "suggestions" are awful. They're bland, are rarely the "answer" I'd give and _never_ the way I'd give it-- and have that irritating "shimmer effect" just to emphasize their awfulness.

Honestly, none of this AI stuff (Apple or otherwise) seems to work anywhere near as well as it's proponents claim, and I'm not seeing much downside for just turning it all off with the master switch at this point.

Wow. That's a really big brain.

However, your instructions to deselect "show siri suggestions in the application" change nothing about the original complaint. Please I request you test your instructions before spending others' time switching things that we have no idea what they do but they didn't do the thing we asked for help doing.

I didn't even know that he had used my phone and purchased all of these different things on my phone I just realized it today when I saw on my Apple thing and I was like OK I don't see my credits so he I saw that he purchased a lot of items too too cell phones like a MacBook and some other things and I need to report all of that stolen

What does this have to do with the original post?

Apple Intelligence has the potential to do many neat things - I love the idea of summarizing notes from text, suggesting changes, etc. This one thing, though - the "Smart Replies" on Messages is so aggravating that I've disabled the entire system to get rid of it. I hate this thing, so much. Apple - please offer customization settings for this tool.
