iTunes for Windows / Apple Devices

A couple of helpful hints re iTunes for Windows, and Apple Devices for Windows. I'm no expert, but have had to jump thru some hoops this past week - somehow 'restored' my iPhone to blank status, yeah, like I just walked out of the store with it, AND, Apple Devices overwrote my backup. So, I had to find and restore all sorts of stuff - contacts, apps, music, photos, etc. God, I hate these programs!

  1. iTunes for Windows won't see your phone unless it's connected to PC when you start up the iTunes app. Apple Devices is the other way around! - yeah, won't see phone unless you plug in USB to phone AFTER you start the Devices app.
  2. Maybe smething wrong w/ my phone, but I just realized something useful. If iTunes or Apple Devices doesn't see your phone, try unplugging USB cord from iPhone, turning the connection end over 180 degrees and plugging it back into phone.
  3. Apple Devices creates a new backup any time you sync or prob perform other, similar actions. It seems to keep maybe 4-6 backups on your PC - and, each time you perform a new action, it deletes the oldest backup and then creates a new bkup. Yeah, this is how I got screwed. And, the backup at the top of the display, which would seem to be the oldest - that's NOT a real backup; it's apparently a blank template, which cannot be restored to your phone. (You wouldn't want to anyway, presumably, if it's blank as I'm guessing.) I cannot imagine why they display this to the user, except poss to confuse us all. That backup can be identified 'cause it'll say something like 'iPhone backup,' not 'Tom's iPhone backup,' like the other choices.

Onward - good luck.
