AirPods Pro 2 hearing test cannot connect to AirPods Pro 2

Brand new AirPods Pro 2. Firmware us update to the latest. iPhone 14 Pro Max, also on latest iOS18.1.

My AirPods Pro 2 are working fine with everything, except when I try to run the hearing test, it asks the question about age, current allergies, recent loud sound exposure, then gives me a blue button to tap. It sits and spins for a minute or so then pops up a window that it cannot connect to AirPods, place them back in case and put them back in my ears.

That accomplishes nothing. I’ve rebooted my phone.

I also have (allegedly) up-to-date AirPods Pro 2 with current firmware but cannot find the hearing test. Not anywhere. My charge is "only" at 78%. I'll try charging to 100% and the familiar reboot.

Now I have new issues- it’s telling me my AirPods Pro 2 need to be cleaned. I do, based on the instructions it links to.

it then says to put back in case for it to run diagnostics and to try again after a few minutes.

still says to clean them… OR it tells me it cannot establish connection (despite every other feature working).

I have found the solution! Stop buying AirPods…. I have a 15 Pro Max. I had to forget and pair every time I wanted to use them. Now I can no longer do that. They connect and don’t work. Or if they do work, I can’t use them with YouTube because the video will freeze and spin until I take them back out. An old pair of soundcore earbuds I picked up cheap are more reliable. Maybe try some raycons next. Both have entirely better battery.

Reading about this issue everywhere for years, Apple knows, but they obviously don’t care.

edit: it did work for a while when I turned off automatic ear detection. Maybe try that!
