My MacBook Pro only recognizes a external mouse as a keyboard

I bought a steelseries mouse with a usb c dongle. When I try to connect it, my mac throws me into a "I don't recognize this keyboard" menu and refuses to talk to the mouse, presumably because it thinks it is a keyboard. I have the same problem with a couple of other mice. The mice work fine with other laptops, the problem is that my Mac is confused.

How can I fix this. I really want to use a 24G wireless mouse, not a bluetooth mouse. This ought to be easy.

I believe I have resolved this. I downloaded additional steelseries software, it told me my mouse needed a critical bios update, and I updated both the mouse and the dongle. I wonder if it's possible to teach the other mice how to talk to a mac. I'm still pretty annoyed at how hard it is to connect a generic mouse to a macbook pro. But at least I have one mouse that works with it. Progress.
