Excessive battery drain on trackpad and bluetooth keyboard

Both trackpad (A1339) and keyboard (A1314) connected to a Mac Mini 2023 (M2 chip) running Sonoma. Around 6 months ago noticed Duracell batteries draining in less than a week in both devices. Googled this but without much joy. It seems to have started with an OS upgrade.

After burning through several 12 packs of Duracells (at great expense) I have invested in rechargeable batteries which I am needing to replace weekly and I am a low user of this kit.

Does anyone know why this is happening and what might be the cure?
