Create Computer account password on first start-up on new Mac mini
This question was posted in 2020 for a Mac mini m1 and had no responses but many clicked the button ”Me too”, today Nov 2024 I had the same exact problem with a new Mac mini m4. I found the solution and will post it below because I am sure there will be more people with the same issue. First the slightly edited initial question:
”On the first setup of a new mac mini, at the step ”Create a Computer account” the only visible fields are Full name, user name, password and hint. After filling these field a pop up error shows:
"the passwords don't match - Check the fields marked with an arrow and enter the same passwords in both fields". The arrow points at the password field
This is confusing as there is only one field - the second field requires a 'hint' - not a password.
Is this a 'known issue' with the mac mini?
As I cannot get any further (cannot start the system) - I'm stuck.
I have had this problem for many days and am becoming rather desperate - please help! ”
SOLUTION:
Thankfully in my case it was not days but minutes, by pure chance I was clicking around where the arrow was pointing on the right of the original password field and by accident clicked where the the password confirmation field, only then it became visible with a blue outline as it has no label. So the password confirmation field is on the right hand side of the password field, if you are a person that tabs between fields instead of using the mouse you will have no problems as by clicking the tab after entering the first password will show the field.
I hope this helps someone.
