I suggest that you start by reviewing the following Apple Support article to give you a basic idea on how to use their tags: Add an AirTag to Find My to keep track of personal items - Apple Support

If you have any specific questions, please don't hesitate to ask and someone here will be happy to address them.

Let's look at an example on how you can use them ... and that would be for car keys. Apple, and other third parties, sell key fobs that can hold an AirTag and your key(s). Should you misplace your keys, having an AirTag on them will make them a lot easier to locate.

Without going into too deep into the technology behind these tags, let's see basically how they would help in locating the missing key(s).

  • If your iPhone is within Bluetooth range (~30-40') of the tag, it will pick up the tag's signal and present its location with the Find My app on the phone.
  • If the tag is outside that range, the tag will participate in the Apple's Find My network. This network consists of literally millions of other iPhones. Any one of those phones that get near the tag, with relay the tag's ID along with the phone's GPS location, over the Internet to the Apple servers. Like in the first case, you would see that location with the Find My app.

The article I provided you should walk you through how you first set up a tag to use with either an iPhone or an iPad.
