Message icon not showing unread messages from android phones

I recently switched from android to the iphone 16 max pro and when I get text messages from friends with android phones, the message icon does not show that I have unread messages. This is not an issue with messages from iphone users. I have double checked that notifications and badges are on and that the contact is not blocked. I tried shutting the phone down and restarting but that didn't help either. I would appreciate any help you can provide.
