What I use is a Smart Album with this criteria:

Then I can sort any way I'd like except manually.

I'm not sure what you mean. In an Album you can sort the Library either way.

In the main Library view, sorting is as it has always been--newest is where you start. So when you open the main window, you're seeing the most recent pictures. It seems to me that's what most people would want. I don't think it would be "common sense" to start at pictures from 10 years ago, or something like that.

What's new is that you can sort the Library by date added in addition to date captured.

Makes sense to me…
