Chromecast Cast Screen showing only black screen + audio - SOLVED
Hi,
After 3 days of much trouble-shooting I solved this problem:
Macbook Pro (2017, 13") running Ventura (13.7.1) using Chrome (131.0.6778.86).
I daily cast screen (using Chrome) in my classroom to a projector with a 2nd generation Chromecast on it. At home I also cast to a similar Chromecast on my home TV. I've been doing this without problem for a couple years. But 3 days ago, I suddenly was getting only black screen on the projector when I tried cast screen. I did eventually realize that audio was transmitting, and that my mac and the Chromecast both thought that screen share was working.
I tried many things (see list below), but the issue was solved when I:
- in Chrome settings, "Turn OFF "Use hardware acceleration when available." (idea from Tip to Fix Black Screen with Audio Issue … - Apple Community
- went to System Settings>Privacy&Security>Screen Recording on my mac and turned off the Screen Recording privileges for Google Chrome (and the one other app using them: Zoom), restarted, and then turned those privileges back on.
I'm assuming that somehow the Google Chrome Screen Recording privilege (necessary for "cast screen" to work) settings had gotten messed up. Problem solved!
Other things I first tried, to no avail.
- Using other computers: they all could cast screen fine
- Using other chromecast devices: still a problem with my MacBook
- Reinstalling Chrome (including deleting contents of ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default) which was suggested on one of the sites I'd consulted
So here's hoping my experience will help someone else!
