all my desktop items are gone

I upgraded to Sequoia. When I start my computer, the desktop is completely empty. When I look in Finder>(my computer's name)>Desktop, it says Desktop-Local on the Finder window and it is empty. Where are all the things that were on my Desktop before upgrading to Sequoia? How to I get them to be on my desktop screen all the time?
