iCloud Notes vs Notes on iPhone

I’m confused about the Notes App. I am on IOS 15 with an iPhone 7. I have hundreds of notes under the heading “ON my iPhone”. I had just a few notes that were syncing to iCloud. I have moved those notes back to my iPhone only. I want to turn off Notes syncing and no longer sync any notes to ICloud. When I toggle the notes option off, it says “

I want to be sure I understand correctly that the Notes I currently store on my phone WILL NOT be deleted. And since I have no “iCloud notes” now there is nothing to delete.

Also, is it true that the Notes on my phone are backed up in nightly backups.

it seems a stupid question — but I really appreciate some clarity. Thanks

Bonjour Charo1973,

Here is what I like about local backups:

  • I don’t need an Internet connection to restore my iPhone (or even to back it up.)
  • Restoring a backup from iCloud can be slow from what I gather (I’ve never tried, though.)
  • My iPhone backups are themselves backed up because I back up my Mac using Time Machine.
  • Local backups do not take storage space on iCloud which, depending on your iCloud+ plan, could be a factor to take into account.

If you want to be extra prepared, do an iCloud backup and a local backups. You’d then have 2 sources of backups to restore from.

Yes, turning off Notes in Settings > [your name] > iCloud will only remove the notes stored on iCloud. The notes stored in the "On My iPhone" location will not be impacted.

Also, the notes stored in the "On My iPhone" location are part of your backup (iCloud or on your computer, depending on which method you use.)

When it comes to iCloud and "On My iPhone", or what data is backed up when using iCloud synchronization, nothing has changed between iOS 15 and iOS 18.

To know what's backed up by iCloud, Apple has this article that states:

iCloud backups include all the information and settings stored on your device that don't already sync to iCloud.

iCloud backups don't include:

    • Data that you already store and sync in iCloud, like Contacts, Calendars, and Notes
    • Photos, if you turned on iCloud Photos
    • iMessages, text (SMS) and multimedia (MMS) messages, if you sync messages with iCloud
    • Data stored in other cloud services, like Gmail and Exchange mail
    • Apple Mail data
    • Apple Pay information and settings
    • Face ID or Touch ID settings
    • iCloud Music Library and App Store content
    • Offline maps

Personally, I prefer backing up on my computer. This method allows to archive backups and thus keep several different versions of the backups. Note that the archiving is not automatic; you have to do it "manually."

Thank you. I can’t believe I’ve been using iPhones for over 10 years and I am just now starting to understand how things are stored with iCloud.

I thought syncing to iCloud would store my info both on my phone and in the cloud and would also be included in my backups. Triple coverage. It seems (at least in IOS 15) that it is inconsistent between apps. Like reminders—toggled it off and now they are deleted. Not a worry—nothing important. I’m just speaking to the inconsistency. Things seem to be here, there, and everywhere. That’s okay—if you know how it works.

Does IOS 18 have the same logic/parameters as IOS 15?

Thank you again for clarifying notes. I can’t afford to lose them.

6x6, you’ve been extremely helpful. Can you tell me why you prefer using iTunes to back up over iCloud. I’ve got a PC using Windows 10. My iCloud backup size is about 45gb. I haven’t backed up on iTunes in several years. Wondering how long it would take and how much free drive space I’d need. I’m hoping there is an iPhone 16 in my future and I want to be prepared with plenty of backup sources to transfer to my new phone. I’m trying to cover all my bases. If you can offer any advice on this, I would love it!
