ios Calendar giving way too many notifications

Recently my iphone is showing far too many calendar notifications. This morning I created a calendar event dated this afternoon. I selected one notification only, 1 hour prior to. I've gotten three notifications so far, 1 hour prior to, then again 26 minutes prior to, then again 24 minutes prior to. Each time I cleared and X'd out of the notifications from the lock screen. This has become the norm. I'm getting notifications all day every day for events that have one or no notifications attached, and notifications for past events days after they occurred. If we can't fix this I'm just switching to Google Calendar for good.
