Daisy chain two external monitors with mac mini m4

Hello community,

I've just purchased a mac mini m4 which can support up to 3 external monitors.

I have a Lenovo ThinkVision P27h-10 monitor which do not have thunderbolt capability.

I am thinking of buying one Thunderbolt 4 monitor to form the mac -> thunderbolt 4 monitor -> ThinkVision P27h-10 set up through thunderbolt daisy chaining.

Upon researching I find there are different types of thunderbolt 4 monitors.

  1. Monitor with both thunderbolt 4 upstream and thunderbolt 4 downstream ports. (Dell u2724DE, HP 727PU, Samsung Viewfinity S80TB)
  2. Monitor with only one thunderbolt 4 upstream but no thunderbolt 4 downstream port. (HP 732PK)

Need to confirm below point for buying the right monitor.

Assume the mac mini m4 will connect to the first monitor's thunderbolt 4 upstream with a genuine thunderbolt cable. Is the thunderbolt 4 downstream port required on the first monitor to achieve daisy chain to the second one? If the first monitor has no thunderbolt 4 downstream port, will the daisy chain work if I connect first monitor's display port output to the second monitor's display port input?

Thanks in advance.

Macs so not support DisplayPort MST daisy-chaining. You can sometimes daisy-chain the old 27” Thunderbolt displays, but that is because they use Thunderbolt.

Many Thunderbolt 3 and 4 docks and hubs will support the connection of two displays with resolutions of up to 4K at 60 Hz, if the Mac supports multiple external displays. This may be through dedicated DisplayPort ports, dedicated HDMI ports, or downstream Thunderbolt ports that support plain USB-C displays and adapters.
