CarPlay crashing when using Siri since iOS 18.1.1

Anyone else having issues with CarPlay and Siri since updating to 18.1.1? Prior to the update never had any issues with my iPhone 15 Pro.

Now CarPlay will run successfully if operated from the screen in the car or via my phone (using maps / music / WhatsApp / messages etc) but if I make a request using Siri with Apple Intelligence my car's entertainment system now goes black before resetting itself as if there is no phone connected.

Reconnecting the phone gets things working again but Siri requests consistently cause the system to crash. Anyone else experiencing similar?

iPhone 15 Pro, iOS 18

This is a known issue with iOS 18 and Mazda, and you'll find a much longer thread about it here on Apple Discussions. I was REALLY hoping that 18.2 would finally solve this, but no--I upgraded yesterday, tried immediately, and Siri requests are still crashing CarPlay just the same. This, unfortunately, makes CarPlay a "hands on" interface, which is really unsafe when driving. FWIW, I have a 2020 CX-5, but this seems to be affecting Mazdas across all models and years.

I too have been experiencing similar issues since upgrading iOS to 18. When I updated to 18.2 the first time I used Siri it worked properly without crashing which lead me to believe it was finally fixed only for it to revert to its crashing behaviour the next time I used it.

I have tested this with CarPlay wired and wireless and no difference in behaviour. This is extremely frustrating.

So far Siri has crashed on every command given, whether it be to play music, change song, map directions, etc.

We MIGHT finally have a solution to CarPlay crashing in Mazda: IOS 18.2.1, which I installed yesterday and tested out today without experiencing a single crash. I invoked Siri for messages, phone calls, Apple Music requests and questions to answer, any one of which could have crashed it in the past, but I had no issues today. I want to give it a few more days before I declare it to be officially and finally fixed, but today was a promising start.

Don't do it. EVER. I've been an Apple customer since 1991, and this has always been the standard starting point response from a rep who has no clue: "Oh, you need to erase everything and start fresh." This should be a matter of absolute last resort because of how incredibly time-consuming it can be, not the first thing you try. And let's talk about "starting fresh" -- for that to have real meaning, you can't just erase your device and then download from a back-up, since a back-up will give you a copy of what you just erased. No, you would need to wipe your device and then do a fresh download of everything, starting with the OS and continuing with the apps, then set everything up from scratch all over again. Also: "starting fresh" assumes that there really isn't some kind of conflict going on that can only be fixed when software gets updated to address the bug. No, it assumes the issue is some glitch in your existing software and that a "fresh copy" will address this, no software update required. Why do reps do this? Think about it: it shifts the burden from being an Apple problem (i.e., the need for a software fix) to a "you" problem -- you need to wipe your device and start over. Somewhere along the way there was a disconnect between Apple and Mazda about iOS 18 that resulted in this issue, and only they can fix it.

I just want to give an update because whilst overall the issue persists I think giving additional information can help Apple etc towards finding and remedying the issue.

Firstly, after updating to 18.3.1 I noticed that Siri did work flawlessly whilst using CarPlay that day. The next day it was back to constantly crashing. Sometimes immediately whilst other times after executing the command. ie. Map directions, play music, etc.

Sometime I've recently noticed, and can't say whether it was an issue before, was that responding to a message in CarPlay using Siri works without issue. So too if I go to Messages and instigate a reply. The crashing appears to only trigger when invoking "Hey Siri" whilst using CarPlay.

Early this month, I had my 2020 Mazda CX-5 in for servicing and the dealer updated the firmware for the infotainment system. I've had it checked and updated previously since I purchased the car, so I wasn't years out of date, but I didn't have the latest firmware available. Since that update, all crashing has stopped and CarPlay is working normally again. I'm running iOS 18.3.2.
