How can I unlock my Macbook with Apple Watch when closed?

As long as the setting is enabled, it works in clamshell mode (external display, keyboard, mouse/trackpad and on AC power) just fine. Just press a keyboard key, click the mouse or trackpad, and the closed Mac will wake up and unlock with the watch. That's how I do it, many times per day with two different Macs.
