How do I screen record on MacBook Air with audio?

HI, All! I use a MacBook Air (M1, macOS Ventura). I often need to record screen during study and work, such as recording some online courses or meeting content, but I always feel that the screen recording operation is a bit inconvenient.

I know that I can use the shortcut key (Shift + Command + 5) to call up the screen recording tool, but I found that the resolution and frame rate of the recorded video can't be adjusted, and the effect is sometimes not clear enough. What's more, it gives me a headache that the system sound can't be recorded at all during recording, only the picture. I checked and it seems that I need to install additional plug-ins or set some complicated options.

Has anyone used the Mac screen recording function or other simple methods to screen record on MacBook Air with the picture and system sound at the same time? It would be even better if the resolution and frame rate can be adjusted! I hope everyone can share some practical tips, thank you very much!

Quicktime player can help you screen record on MacBook Air with audio. It comes pre-installed on macOS and allows basic screen recording with audio, but it requires some setup for system audio recording.

  1. Open QuickTime Player from the Applications folder or via Spotlight search. Go to File > New Screen Recording.
  2. In the recording toolbar, click the small arrow next to the record button. Select your MacBook Microphone if you want to record external audio like your voice.
  3. Click the Record button and select the area of the screen to record or choose the full screen.
  4. Click Stop in the menu bar to end the recording.
  5. Save the recorded file to your desired location.

OBS Studio is a powerful, free tool for recording your screen and audio, ideal for more advanced setups.

How to record screen on Mac with audio free:

  1. Get OBS Studio from the official website.
  2. Launch OBS and click the + icon in the Sources panel. Add a Display Capture source for the screen.
  3. Add an Audio Input Capture source for your microphone.

Screen recording on a MacBook Air with audio! Been there, done that! While it's a relatively straightforward process, there are some common errors to watch out for to ensure your recording goes smoothly.

Make sure your audio settings are correct. Go to System Preferences > Sound > Output and select the correct audio device (e.g., internal speakers, headphones, or external speakers). Also, check that the "Show volume in menu bar" option is enabled.

If you're using external speakers or headphones, ensure they're properly connected and set as the default output device. You can also try adjusting the volume slider or using the Audio MIDI Setup app to configure your audio devices.

QuickTime Player! While it's great that it comes pre-installed on your MacBook Air, I've got to warn you that using it for screen recording on MacBook Air with audio might not be the most ideal solution.

Once you've recorded your screen, you're stuck with a rough cut that's hard to edit. There's no built-in trimming, splitting, or merging of clips, making it a hassle to refine your recording. If you need to record your face or reactions while screen recording, QuickTime Player doesn't support webcam capture. You'll need to use another app or software to record your video and audio separately.
