MacOS 15.2 screen mirroring stuck on when smart tv is used as a monitor.

M4 Mac mini running macOS sequoia 15.2 using a Sony Bravia 9 for the monitor. Screen mirroring is stuck ON and it will not allow it to be disabled. The M4 Mac mini is plugged in using the HDMI output. This problem did not exist with macOS sequoia 15.1 with the same setup. Is there a fix for this problem?

I'm also having the same problem on a M2 Max Mac Studio plugged into a 43" Dell monitor - it's not even a TV, but maybe the "bug" is any screen over a certain size? Super annoying.

Add me to the list of users affected by this issue. What’s super frustrating is I called in about 2 1/2 months ago as I was beta testing the 15.2 release. I was told by Apple support that I shouldn’t be on the beta software, and that was the cause of my issue. I asked them to report it as a bug, and I reverted back to 15.1 from a clean install. Fast forward to today, my Mac updated to 15.2, and the issue is back. I called Apple support, and they said that they’re aware of the issue and they’re working to resolve it. It seems like this should’ve been done before they pushed this update to the public.

This seems to be a VERY SERIOUS BUG, especially if you have a mac mini 4. I will report this exact text to apple. Since you have no built in display to begin with on a mini, the 15.2 BUG is mirroring your only external display to itself. When you click stop mirroring ( or extending) or even worse hit the “change” button, you completely loose mouse and keyboard control. The only way I could even get to my machine was through VNC and then I could force a restart from there. This cant possibly be the way apple intended for this to work. This morning, before updating to 15.2, I was using mirroring, extending my display, using sidecar, etc flawlessly. I truly REGRET upgrading to 15.2 , its a new machine. Less than a few days old

Same issue for me. Mac Mini M4 MacOS 15.2. Before the update it was also working as intended.

I have a portable USBC monitor that I plug in directly with a USBC cable. The system shows it as a 42-inch (2560 × 1600) and ASM-160QC Display. The monitor is not any larger then 17 inches though and I do expect that it is seeing it as a TV and not my primary display.

After the update it shows that it is mirroring the display when it is the only one connecting to it. I also use my Ipad M4 as a secondary monitor and was able to extend to the display without issues before the update. Now when I try to just extend to the iPad, it will blank out the USBC monitor, will not extend the display to the iPad, but I can move the mouse and type on my iPad from my Mac setup. It will not respond and I cannot see anything on the Mac screen and it does not extend the screen to the iPad. I am basically stuck at this point. I found though that unpluging the USBC Monitor from the Mini and plugging it back in will revert it back so I can at least use the Mac. I will try the software that is mentioned in this and will see if this allows me to use it again but this does need to be fixed.

Very confusing. I'm hoping it's just a bug. Multiple people on Reddit have reported the same issue with various brands of TV's. The other issue it is causing is the TV will not remember the settings for that input anymore. Every time I change inputs, when I go back to the input the Mac mini is on, the input resets back to video mode instead of the PC mode it was set to.

I, too, had this same issue, and Apple Support stated to then have my OS to be reinstalled.

It took a while to try to narrow this down, but using the Better Display Pro software, I was able to find that my role for my TV was already set as a Computer monitor. And before this the System Information stated that the display is a Television.

So, using the software above, I set it to Television, nothing happened, but then changed to Computer monitor and then the Screen Mirroring finally went away.

I've rebooted to make sure it was persistent, and it's still gone, which is great.

I think the update must have seen that, yes, there is a TV plugged in, the update probably configured it as a TV, even though it was slated as a Computer monitor on 15.1, got a configuration mixup, and caused it thinking that it was in perma Screen Mirroring.

Quite annoying, but it's all good now.

Top man, that did the trick! I thought it was some installed software issue or the like - it also fixed the problem with Night Shift not working! (that hasn't worked on my M4 Mini on 15.1 or 15.2).

I assume this has always been an issue, but not so readily noticeable as it is in 15.2 (as you get the Screen Mirroring Icon on your status bar highlighted with no option to turn it off!)

Thanks again, I already had Better Display - it's a great bit of software, but I didn't realize it could fix this as well!

Great stuff,

Jon. :)
