iMac no longer detecting Dell monitor

All of a sudden my iMac started not recognizing my external Dell monitor.

I tried the monitor on another iMac and it worked fine, so that's not it.

I swapped out the cable and that didn't change anything.

I tried a different USBC port and that didn't do anything.

Lastly, I tried to power a different device with the same USBC port and that worked, so it appears that the problem is internal with the iMac.

When I click "detect displays" nothing happens so that seems to be a bit of a clue.

I have also updated the OS, tried updating the NVRAM and nothing has worked. Anyone have any other ideas?

Oh, it has also all of a sudden become difficult to wake up (takes a long time and sometimes requires pushing the power button.

It's a 3.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel.

Bitdefender, the VPN and CMM are your problem!!!!!!

Not only are they 100% worthless they cause nothing but problems and absolutely nothing that Mac OS cannot do on its own! Please locate the developers uninstall instructions and follow to the letter for each app!!

Then restart in Safe Mode and restart normally. For insurance download FindAnyFile and have it search for:

  • Bitdefender
  • the VPNs name
  • CleanMyMac
  • MacPaw

and have it trash ANYTHING with those names in it! Empty the Trash. Moving forward to keep Mac OS Fast, secure, bug free and stable keep it up to date and restart the computer about 1x per week. Finally, never ever install any of the following types of third party apps:

  • Antivirus Apps
  • Cleaning Apps
  • Security Apps
  • VPN Apps
  • Maintenance Apps

I’d suggest, LuckyTCB, that you get rid of ‘em- they often cause more problems than they solve… anyways, try doing a reset SMC and 3-4 Pram zaps on startup… see this link :

https://www.macworld.com/article/224955/how-to-reset-a-macs-nvram-pram-and-smc.html.. also, reboot, holdi g down the shift key until you see the words “safe mode” on your monitor… if the problem goes away, then there you go… with safe mode, which only loads basic stuff, then it’d be a dodgy app or piece of software which causes your problem
