Cannot Use (Arzopa) USB-C Portable External Display on Apple Silicon Mac

I’ve got a 15-inch Arzopa portable external monitor that takes both power and image over the same USB-C cable. It works perfectly with its OEM cable with both my 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro (final revision) and 11-inch IPad Pro (2nd-generation).

When I plug it into my M4 Max MacBook Pro, the Mac doesn’t even ask to connect to the accessory. The display briefly powers up, then goes dark with a No Signal message.

I’ve tried setting System Preferences > Privacy & Security > Allow accessories to connect to Always, but the same behavior persists.

I’ve heard plug orientation matters even over USB-C when using USB v2, so just to be thorough, I tried plugging in the cable in all 4 possible orientations — no dice.

Is this just a bug in macOS or is there something on the user-end I can do?

I experienced the same issue. I spoke to a representative at the Apple Store in January 1-25 who indicated this may be a compatibility issue with the Thunderbolt 5 port. For me, the Arzopa External Monitor (Model S1 Table) will self-power using my MacBook Air, but not the MacBook Pro (M4).

I have the same problem with an ARZOPA 16" 2.5K Portable Monitor, 2560x1600 QHD IPS Display and a 2025 16" MacBook Pro. It will not work with a single thunderbolt cable for power and video.

It will work with:

  • a thunderbolt cable and HDMI cable
  • two thunderbolt cables

iPhone 15 Pro Max (2023) will work with a single thunderbolt cable for both power and video

16" MacBook Pro (2020) will work with a single thunderbolt cable for both power and video

I would love to know if Apple comes up with a software fix.

ThunderBolt-5 ports:

There are many reports of the ThunderBolt-5 ports not being willing to supply more than a trivial amount of power outbound.

It is not yet known whether this new interface is:

not capable of supplying large-scale power, or

whether it is a Mistake in this new hardware and software or

whether there are additional conditions that must be met, such as having a power input source connected.

Apple does not search these user-to-user support forums for new outstanding issues. Your report of this being an issue for you, recorded on the feedback pages, will tend to hasten Apple's investigation, and bring this to a resolution sooner:

Good day,

What did Arzopa support say about this? It has always been the responsibility of peripheral makers to insure compatibility that they claim, not the computer or OS developers.

If you read Grant Bennet-Alder's last post, you will find that Apple will not see your concern here, nor respond to questions in this user-to-user setting. Apple does not share what they are working on.

Please use the feedback link that Grant posted to place your concern before an Apple Employee
