Trash icon in Sequoia dock turned white

The Trash icon in my dock has suddenly turned white and very hard to see against the white dock background. I am running Sequoia 15.2 on a M2 MacBook Pro.

Before this happened I added a new folder to the dock, right to the left of the Trash icon. I haven’t installed anything recently. The Trash operates normally. I’ve searched for answers and haven’t found an anything that works. I did try downloading a free trash icon from a website and copying and pasting it onto the Trash Get Info window, but that didn’t work. Also tried restarting.

I really want the regular default icon back, but how?

Well, worst case, you could just nuke the dock and "factory reset" it to it's default setting from the Terminal using the command below. You should probably screenshot your desktop first though, since you will lose all your customizations (apps added to the dock, or removed from them, and so on - it will be a dock like on a newly set up Mac).

defaults delete com.apple.dock; killall Dock

Command i for the Get info pane— highlight the icon and try Command Z to restore the default.

My Trash looks the same as yours. Everything works as intended. I don't see any problem here ...

Thanks but I did try both of those things with no result.

However I can't find the actual Trash application itself, so I can't do the get info part.

I know how to do that with an app in the Applications folder. With regard to get info all I could do was get info using the dock Trash icon (now white) and try command Z and command C. Neither worked.

I now remember the Trash icon changed to white soon after I changed my Desktop Wallpaper, but I have no idea if that is relevant.

?

I believe if you Control click on the Trash icon in the Dock there is an option to put it in the Finder Sidebar.

if not Control try the Option or Command. Go from there...

so change the background image to something else and compare your results if in doubt(?)

I found this link https://macosx.com/threads/how-to-change-the-icon-of-trash.275476/ and played around with the icons in the Dock.app there but am hesitant to delete anything there, so....my Trash in the dock is still white.

I would not look at anything that is dated, 2006.... from your link (?)

try emptying the Trash. If it is empty, try putting something in there.

posting a screen shot might help better understand you issue.

Hi JOS,

If you are having trouble distinguishing gray scaled objects on gray..?

Go to Apple > System Settings > Accessibility > Display and play with the following settings.

1) Make sure that Increase contrast is turned OFF

2) Test with a solid Dock by turning Reduce transparency ON

3) Make sure that the Display contrast slider is set all the way to Normal

My dock background was white before I increased the contrast. Now the background is grayish like yours (although it's flat not angled like yours) and the Trash is easier to see.

I'm going to let it rest for now. Thank you for all the suggestions!
