After iOS 18.2, the Nimble Podium will no longer charge my iPhone 14 Pro Max

I have a Nimble Podium charging station. I bought it at an Apple Store and absolutely love it. This morning, after updating my iPhone (14 pro max) to iOS 18.2, the Nimble Podium will no longer charge my iPhone in any position.

I've unplugged it, moved it around, restarted my phone, etc. However, if I take my case (Apple MagSafe clear case) off of my iPhone, it works.

I thought it was a fluke until we tried the same thing with my wife's iPhone (13) and it went the same way. Before iOS 18.2, it worked with the case on. Now, it doesn't.

I can't find anything in the iOS 18.2 update descriptions that I think would impact this, but I don't know what else to blame. I'm totally stumped. Can anyone provide an explanation or make a recommendation?

I completely empathise with your frustration. I'm experiencing the exact same issue with my iPhone 15 Pro Max after updating to iOS 18.2.1 (from 18.1, I believe). Like you, my Nimble Podium charger (3-in-1) won't charge my iPhone when it's in its MagSafe case, though it worked perfectly before the update.

Interestingly, the left side charging pad (where I usually place my AirPods Pro case) works fine when the phone is laid flat on the charging station, and the Apple Watch charging pad is functioning normally. We've tested this with four iPhones in our household (mine, my wife's, and our two kids' - theirs are all 16 Pro models), all recently updated and in various Apple-branded MagSafe cases. None of them work on the central MagSafe charging dock unless we remove the cases, despite charging perfectly fine before the 18.2.1 update. This strongly suggests the problem stems from the iOS update rather than the phones or cases.

The iOS 18.2/18.2.1 update appears to have introduced a software-related issue affecting wireless charging, particularly with MagSafe cases. The fact that removing the case allows charging to work suggests that the update has changed how the iPhone interacts with MagSafe accessories.

The issue likely relates to changes in power management or charging protocols, affecting how the iPhone communicates with MagSafe accessories or possibly altering power draw limitations.

I'm reporting it to both Apple Support and Nimble in the hope that the more reports they receive, the higher the likelihood of a swift resolution.

In the meantime, I'm charging my phone in the case, laying it flat on the left side of the charging station - where I usually place my AirPods Pro case. That said, if I want the clock orientation, etc., I'll need to charge without the case, which is far from ideal.

Some people have reported success with temporary fixes, such as:

  • Restarting the phone.
  • Removing, cleaning and reapplying the case.
  • Disabling the Optimised Battery Charging feature temporarily.

However, none of these 'temporary' workarounds worked for any of the iPhones or cases in our household.

Let's hope Apple and/or Nimble address this issue quickly. It's clear this isn't an isolated incident, and it's causing significant inconvenience for many users.

Same issue! Chargers were working fine, with the update nothing works. Wireless chargers, car charger (new car with wireless and port), etc. I have tried different outlets, cubes, cables, wireless charges, taking the case off, and absolutely nothing works. Apple support ran dx and found nothing wrong with the phone. This is unacceptable.

If you remove the case, your iPhone charges. The issue is the case. You’ve repeated the inability to charge on your spouses device, so the defect is repeatable. The issue is the case. Please contact Apple support and get the case diagnosed and replaced if necessarily.

I’m having the same issue since I updated from iOS 17 to 18.2 on my iPhone XS Max two days ago.

I have to take the case off to get the charger to work. It’s bizarre. I doubt that we have the same case but mine is just a simple clear plastic case but with a magnetic ring in the back for attaching to charge pads. The charging issue I’m having happens with lightning cable plug in though.

I’ve tried restarting the device, trying other chargers and cables, and cleaning out the port for dust. Same behaviour.

Maybe the power draw on 18.2 is so significant that most typical chargers can’t keep up like they used to? If so, I regret updating!

There is no solution if you want to stick with the Nimble.

I tried all suggestions, as well as a new Nimble charger, replaced by Apple.

Nothing worked.

I replaced the Nimble for the Twelve South HiRise 3 Deluxe 3-in-1 charger, I have not had any issues with it.

It is therefore 100% the Nimble charger, it is possibly software related (which means a patch / update could solve it). It could equally be a hardware issue - something now incompatible.

Personally, if you can, I would return the Nimble and get something else.

I’m having the same issue. After I did the update to IOS 18.3.2 it will no longer charge on the nimble charging stand with my case on. It worked just fine before the update. I have tried 2 different cases—ones that are supposed to allow for stand magnetic charging (Otterbox Defender). It will work with the Nimble if I take the case off. I just think it’s weird it worked with the case on prior to the update. It does charge using cable, so I’m back to that. Any word from Apple on what the issue is with the update??

For anyone still having issues with this;

  • I got a new Nimble Podium 3-in-1 in December.
  • Worked perfectly fine for a few weeks (iPhone 15 Pro Max).
  • Updated to 18.2, stopped charging the phone on the MagSafe section in any phone case.
  • It would charge without a case.
  • Tried other phones (wife and son), iPhone 16 Pro's on 18.2 - neither worked in the case.
  • All 3 phones had different cases.
  • All 3 phones charged without case.
  • Returned the Nimble Podium 3-in-1 to Apple.
  • Received a new Nimble Podium 3-in-1 as a replacement.
  • Worked perfectly fine for about 10 days at most (the phone would charge in the case).
  • After 10 days or so, performance declined (still on 18.2 at this time).
  • A charge was intermittent when in the case, but it charged without a case.
  • Updated to 18.3, and there is no difference, I am lucky to get 1% charge before the charge drops.
  • The charger/phone continually try to connect, but the connection is unstable, as such the charge fails.
  • I am returning this second Nimble Podium 3-in-1 to Apple at the weekend and will be purchasing something else.
  • Any recommendations welcome - ideally 3-in-1 as I have Watch, AirPods and iPhone.

“Went the same way” means that I had the same result with my wife’s phone as I did when using my phone. The case is preventing charging since updating to iOS 18.2, whereas it did not prevent charging prior to the update. The Nimble Podium is a wireless charging station sold by Apple.

XS Max, doesn’t fast charge. But over time wall chargers may put out less wattage and cables can wear to. Small, thin wires within the sheath break and the internal resistance builds and wattage drops.

Please try other cables and chargers for a day or two and then we’ll have better information to move forward.

Same problem. Iphone 16 pro. When I use Magsafe(original Apple loader) phone makes sound(bleep) when I put it on and there is a circle in the corner that the phone starts loading. All as usual. But I put the phone on loader with 44% battery. An hour later battery percentage is down to 33%, without touching it, on loader constant. This happened after update to ios18.2. Worked fine before.
