Hi - I have a new problem, Mail won't open when Google Chrome is open, and vice versa. This is annoying when I'm trying to coordinate details from one to the other. It only started recently, I think Chrome had an update. Also the About this Mac won't open either. I usually use Chrome as it has until now been more reliable than Safari with some websites. Mac OS Big Sur 11.7.10

To start, I'd suggest seeing if the issues persist while in safe mode. Let us know the results.
Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support
Are you using any anti-virus software, cleaning software, or other third-party utilities?
Also, as long as you have a Time Machine backup, you can safely upgrade to the latest version of macOS, macOS Sequoia. Chances are, the upgrade will go smoothly. But if not, you'll have a backup of your data.

You might consider not using Chrome. It's a known problem for many Mac systems. See these topics:

Firefox or Brave would be better browsers from a security and performance point of view. If you upgrade your system Safari would be an excellent choice.
Just some food for thought.
This is't a Chrome issue - I haven't had any problems with latest Version 131.0.6778.205 (Official Build) (x86_64) or earlier versions. It's more likely caused by viruses/malware/dodgy 3rd party apps. Are any of these installed?
All those links contain false, unreliable, biased, ignorant or outdated information. Chrome is an excellent browser. Additionally, Chrome works well on some US government sites where Safari doesn’t at all.
Just curious, why are you running a no longer supported version of macOS when you could be running up to the current version of Sequoia?

You’re right, sorry I was thinking of my old laptop which is about 2010! I’m thinking of upgrading but always nervous, it seems to cause problems every time.
