Missing Messages on iMac after Sync Now

Gaaaaak! Suddenly ALL my messages on my iMac (Sonoma 14.70), just DISAPPEARED. No, they weren't deleted. They are all still on my other machines and my Iphone. I tried doing Sync Now on that Mac, and it just never comes back. The button just stays pressed. I log out of iCloud, and log back in and still nothing there. I reboot, and nothing changes. Where are those messages, and, at the least, how can I port all of them from my other devices back onto my iMac?

Well, I pulled Me/Library/Messages from my nightly backup and replaced that folder in my iMac. Now all of my messages (except the ones that arrived today) are back in place. So I'm mostly fixed. Something got bolluxed in that folder, I guess.

But how do I get the latest messages from today from my other machines, that do have them? Syncing doesn't seem to recover them on my iMac. I sync my iPhone messages to the cloud, and then sync messages on my iMac, which should pull them all in from the cloud. But it doesn't.
