Eye Pain, Dry eye, Headaches, and Discomfort with MacBook Pro M3 16-inch

Since switching from a MacBook Air M1 to a MacBook Pro M3 16-inch, I’ve experienced severe eye strain, fastly dry eye, headaches, and nausea. These symptoms start within minutes of use and persist for hours, making the device difficult to use. I never faced these issues with my MacBook Air M1.

Leaving my MacBook M3 in the corner going back to Air M1, is the solution for now!

But I’ve tried multiple adjustments, including:

• Lowering brightness, low profiles (600nits) and enabling Night Shift.

• Disabling True Tone and experimenting with font smoothing.

• Trying Dark Mode.

I’ve seen doctors for eye strain and migraines before, but never had this issue with my MacBook Air M1. It seems linked to the MacBook Pro M3’s display or technology.

None of these adjustments have alleviated the problem. I suspect the display technology, such as PWM or rendering changes in macOS, might be causing these issues. Bright animations, scrolling, and transitions also seem to make the symptoms worse.

I’d appreciate any workarounds or solutions, as I rely heavily on this device for work and these symptoms are significantly affecting my productivity.

You need to see a medical professional.

"Severe eye strain, fastly dry eye, headaches, and nausea" are symptoms that may be caused by many things. We can not diagnose nor treat medical conditions.

what i did i switched back to my Mac air m1! and now i'm very good! what do you think?

What do I think? I think you have a medical condition. Millions of users do not experience the symptoms you describe. I think we users can not diagnose your condition or its cause.

It is winter here. The humidity in the house will drop to 30+ % unless I continuously run a humidifier to keep the humidity at 45 - 50%. Without the humidifier, I will need optometrist-recommended, over-the-counter eye drops or eyestrain will occur from dry eye.

I wear prescription eyeglasses specifically made for computer screen distances for improved resolution (and less eyestrain) as I spend long hours in front of a 32-in 4K Ultrafine display. Seldom do I get eyestrain headaches, but when I do, or even if I do not, and without eyewear, I periodically stare out the window or watch TV to switch my focal distance. I prefer lower-light settings so no window glare or nearby lights are present to reflect from the screen, though I happen to have a non-glare screen on the LG display.

I use macOS dark appearance mode, and a Safari extension (Noir) to force a black background on web pages including these community pages. That reduces eyestrain considerably.

Many years ago, when I was writing code with a 19-inch Sun monochrome monitor on my Desktop, I had glaring overhead lighting and a window cube, where despite the Levolor blinds being closed, caused a striped effect across the screen. I managed by wearing Polarized Revo sunglasses. This was as a younger man with no corrective eyeglasses needed.

Same here. Nothing I did helped. I got down a huge rabbit hole of PWM and "Dithering". For me, I could never look at Samsung screen phones, the MacBook Air 16" is just like that, but worse.

I went "down" to a 15" M3 MacBook Air and absolutely no issues. Give that a try. It's nice to have something more portable too, but there absolutely is something wrong with those screens for our eye type.
