Data transfer from old external drive backup of Mac. Trying to retrieve

I have an old external drive I used to back up data from the Time Machine on an old Mac with Intel Chip. Do not remember. The port on the back is USB 2.0. It has been in storage a good deal of time. I would like to retrieve some photos scanned in as well as some personal writings, but unsure if it is possible to transfer data in such a way it can be read on one of my two Mac's (MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and iMac vintage 2022) both with M1 chips. Hard Drive was purchased at Fry's in 08/2012. Drive is "high speed" SATA/IDE with USB 2.0 and e-SATA interface. 3.5 inch "hot swappable" drive in purchased aluminum enclosure. I still have the old iMac in the closet, but unfortunately, it has the dreaded flashing question mark (?)

Easiest would be to read from drive to one of my Macs, but next best would be to transfer data to a contemporary drive, even a flash drive with USB C port would be OK. Not sure data formatted using Mac with Intel chip can be read by anything other than an Intel chipped Mac. Any advice on whether this is even doable would be appreciated. Is so, might go to Mac repair and pay for them to do it, but do not want to waste money/be scammed, if this is not possible. If an easy solution, USB 2.0 to USB C cable to transfer, I would do it. I am versed on trouble shooting software issues on my computer, but this issue is way over my head. Thank you. Craig R.

New Apple Silicon computers can read from older Time Machine Backup drives created on Intel computers.

Older TM backups may be formatted in HFS + but can still be read.

The only issue is the USB -A male connector on the drive that needs a USB-A to USB - C connector.

This inexpensive adaptor is available from many on-line vendors.

Open the older drive in Time Machine Backup and restore the deleted files.

Thanks to all for the support. I went to Santa Cruz Electronics today and purchased a USB 3.3 Gen 1 Portable Hub-4-PORF. It comes with an attached USB C cable, which I plugged into the computer. I purchased a USB 2.0 to USB C cable, plugging the USB 2.0 into the hard disk drive and the USB B into one of. the ports on the Portable Hub. I now have access to everything. Not all I hoped for, but found some writings from 2012 as well as many old pictures I had deleted from my computer, but regretted . (I am not knowledgeable enough to have found this on my own. This store has very knowledgeable staff. I showed the salesperson the community responses and it only took her about 1 minute to locate everything I needed.
