reducing image size in an iMessage text

Simple question. How do I adjust the size of received images in an iMessage text? If I resize the image, and plunk it in the text, it always comes out the same size as before it was resized. Obviously, if you make the image really tiny before emplacing in a text, when it's blown up to the standard size, it just looks blurry.
