AirPlay randomly change audio language on YouTube from MacBook Pro to Apple TV

I'm using a MacBook Pro, Mac OS 15.2, Safari 18.2, extension: Ad Guard 1.11.20.

When sending specific YouTube videos to an Apple TV using AirPlay, the language switches to a random language on the Apple TV. This occurs a few seconds after the video starts on the Apple TV. The languages used so far are randomly Spanish, German, and French. This does not occur with all YouTube videos, but the videos that it does occur on always switch language.

The menu selection for choosing an audio language in the YouTube video settings menu in both Safari and the Apple TV is not shown so there is no ability to switch the language back. The language selection is shown in other videos. This seems to be random.

My guess is that YouTube is trying different methods to block or restrict their videos when an Ad Blocker is used. Google wants to shove their adds down your throat and they stop at nothing to do that. It looks like a game of cat and mouse.

The ad blocker does an update to get around this and Google counters. This goes back and forth. Using random languages seems to be the latest attempt at thwarting ad blockers.

Anyone else see this? Anyone see any work arounds?

Using the Brave browser on Mac OS sometimes gets around this, but Google often thwarts this browser as well since Brave's ad blocker is built in to the browser.

Using Brave on IOS and AirPlay to send YouTube videos currently works but the quality is restricted. Using Safari on IOS works but you're seeing all the adds again.

I've also been driven nearly to madness with this same situation.

I have a work around but it sucks a bit. If you go into video quality setting and reduce the quality to 360p then it will be in the correct language.

I called Apple about this and they didn't have a clue about how to fix it and referred me to Google. Never could get any assistance from them at all.

It's a long shot but give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Create and log into a new, basic, admin user account, Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac and see if the problem persists. This tells us if the problem is limited to your user account or is system wide.

Note:  do not launch any 3rd party apps in the account so as to not install any of the supporting files that most create.

If the problem isn't present then your original account has software installed that is causing the problem.

Logged into a separate account. It still switches languages. Also, there's a setting on the Apple TV I found under the "Video and Audio" selection in settings, then under "Audio" and "Audio Language" the setting was in "Auto." I selected "English" with some hope that the selection might work... Nope.

Still switches languages using a random language. Still suspect YouTube trying to thwart ad blockers.

The work around I came up with is to set up screen extension. Then just drag the Safari window to the new screen. Click on full screen in the YouTube window and that works. There's no difference in the video at that point. Screen extension is less reliable than using airplay from the YouTube window but it works. Screen extension will just drop at random points.

Posting again as my first attempt apparently violated some kind of rule....

Add me to those experiencing this issue.

No, it isn't the setting on the receiving device, Apple TV in my case. I've checked the language settings on both devices. That is not the issue. Please don't suggest that it is and describe how to access these settings. It will not be helpful to do so. It isn't the issue!

My money is on Google and YouTube as the culprit. Causing this change in language to thwart ad blockers and/or VPNs. I don't have the time or energy to waste turning these things off. Using adblocker and VPNs make the web a tolerable experience. When I've had to access the web without ad blockers and a VPN the experience is awful and the web is nearly unusable. I can't fathom how anyone tolerates the mess. OK, back to the topic at hand...

It's a shame there doesn't appear to be a solution to this irritating situation. Could it be something in the latest Airplay code? That I don't know how to check.

PS. Surely this post doesn't violate the rules or offend anyone...

This has been happening on both of my apple TV's for what seems like a year now, and it's driving me insane. For me it's every youtube video I try to push via airplay. This is a major feature of the product/platform to just be totally non-functional, and can't believe it hasn't been addressed by now. This should be a non-existent issue with native apple products from the same brand.

Apple's OS' across the board have been getting buggier and more unstable, and my confidence with the direction of their software is at an all time low. I hope to god this particular bug gets sorted out soon.

I haven't started up in safe mode in some time. I definitely needed the refresher there. Thank you! Remember "Extension Manager" pre OSX? Lol

Anyway, safe mode did not work. Language switched to German on the Apple TV for this video:

I also disabled the Ad Guard extension in Safari, purged all YouTube website data in Safari, and restarted Safari.

The adds were back of course, but language in the vide changed to German once the video was sent to the Apple TV via AirPlay. Again, no options available to select language.

Then I deleted the YouTube app off of the Apple TV and restarted the ATV. The language changed again, this time to French. I think that was just random.

The adds played in English, but the video changed back to French when the add ended.

Turning off AirPlay and reselecting the MacBook for video play resulted in English language again.

I also haven't found any settings that make any difference. The only work around I have is to use Screen Extension to the Apple TV and move the Safari window to that display, then run it full screen. As long as the connection holds it works fine.

The Apple TV "Screen Extension" connection does not hold that long. It usually drops within several minutes.

So then I used "Screen Extension" on my Sony Bravia TV which has Airplay capability. That holds the Screen Extension connection much better than the Apple TV. The connection still drops but not nearly as much as the Apple TV.

One thing I tried early on is using the Airplay function in the YouTube window to send directly to the Sony Bravia, but that just turns it into a "Cast" function that activates the YouTube app on the Sony Bravia "Google OS" and the adds just come streaming down..... So no.

I've seen quality take a downturn with all Apple devices and software I've had over the last several years.

I don't know if the language issue is related to that.

The fix I have in place is to use my Airplay TV as an extended screen and then move the browser window with YouTube over there and play it full screen. It has the same exact result as using the airplay button in the YouTUbe video. I can also do a screen extension using the Apple TV, but my Sony Bravia has a more stable connection then the Apple TV which is also my Apple Home hub. The airplay connection to my Apple TV keeps dropping.
