How to play QuickTime iMovie video files using Sequoia 15.1.1

Home movies in old version of iMovie can't open on newer commuter. Last update to movie/video files was in Catalina 10.5.7. Error message reads:The file isn’t compatible with QuickTime Player. Currently trying to open on computer using Sequoia 15.1.1

macOS Mojave and earlier nagged that support for old video codecs were soon to be dropped and offered to convert them. The support was then dropped in Catalina.


If that is the case, you can use apps like IINA or VLC to play such old movies.


Or use Handbrake, Shutter Encoder, VLC or ffmpeg to convert them to supported H.264 or H.265 (HEVC) video codec and AAC audio codec wrapped as .mp4 (or .m4v or .mov).
